El Salvador Supreme Court overturns abortion conviction
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — El Salvador’s Supreme Court has overturned a 30-year sentence for a woman convicted in July of aggravated homicide for allegedly having an abortion.
The court ordered a new trial for Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz, who was released Friday after almost three years in jail. She was greeted by activists chanting “Evelyn, you are not alone!”
Hernandez said she was raped and didn’t realize she was pregnant. She also said she felt pains and passed out during what may have been a miscarriage in April 2016.
The Associated Press normally doesn’t name victims of alleged sexual assault, but Hernandez has spoken publicly about her case.
Abortion is illegal in all situations in El Salvador.
