2 GOP candidates eye challenge in competitive Maine district
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Republican challengers to Democratic Rep. Jared Golden are coming into focus, as one candidate is set to announce and another is very close.
Former GOP state Sen. Eric Brakey is scheduled to formally declare his intention to run for Golden’s seat on Tuesday. The Sun Journal reports Adrienne Bennett, the former press secretary to former Gov. Paul LePage, is also planning to run.
Brakey served in the Maine Senate from 2014 to 2018 and lost a U.S. Senate bid against incumbent independent Angus King last year.
Bennett says she plans to announce her decision within a few weeks. Bennett, Brakey and any other Republican challengers would face off in a June primary.
Golden was elected in 2018 in the first congressional election decided by ranked-choice voting in U.S. history.
