Keep Pressure On Catholic Church

September 10, 2018 GMT

Editor: As a lifelong Catholic, I am appalled at the ongoing sex scandal within the Catholic Church. From the Pope on down, the church has become a nest of vipers. The foxes are in charge of the hen house. For real reform to take place, the church needs to be purged of all known sex offenders. Most, if not all, of the leadership within the church also needs to be replaced. While all senior leaders in the church may not have actively participated in abusive acts or in protecting known offenders, most, if not all senior leaders surely were aware of the problem and are guilty of failure to report the problem. Frankly, I’m tired of priests hiding behind their collars. They are cowards and should all be subject to the same legal standards as everyone else. If convicted they will have plenty of time in prison to reflect on their sins in prayer. There are certainly plenty of good, moral and decent priests in the church. Unfortunately, their actions are overshadowed by the good-old-boy mentality within the church. The argument for purging these bad priests is that the church would lose thousands of priests and there would be a priest shortage. Personally, I would rather go to a service conducted by a decent lay person than a service conducted by some demented individual. I applaud the local media for keeping pressure on the Catholic Church. Without transparency, it will be back to business as usual. John Matusick FORTY FORT
