Community meeting planned on proposed quarry
The potential reopening of a rock quarry east of Glide will be the subject of a community meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Glide Community Center, 20062 North Umpqua Highway.
Terry Rudolph, a neighbor of the quarry, said he called the meeting so those who live near the site could discuss its impact.
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners last week approved a permit allowing landowner Bjorn Vian to reopen the quarry, last operational in the 1950s.
Some neighbors testified it would create noise and dust and cause problems for the local sewer system and local wells. About 76 households are located within a half mile of the quarry site.
The commissioners’ decision is expected to be appealed to the state Land Use Board of Appeals.
