Kish College offers short-term training programs in summer
The Kishwaukee College Continuing Education department is offering several short-term training programs over the summer.
The Phlebotomy Technician, Pharmacy Technician and Veterinary Assistant programs will begin the week of May 8. All programs have a mandatory orientation from 7 to 8 p.m. May 3 at the college.
Short-term training are non-credit programs that prepare students for a variety of entry-level positions. The programs prepare students to work in the field and to pass national certification testing. Short-term training programs often provide a path to a skilled position that can act as a gateway to further career development. All three of the programs being offered this summer combine classroom learning with externships for practical application and experience. Externship placement assistance is provided by Kishwaukee College.
Phlebotomy technicians are health care professionals who obtain and prepare specimens for laboratory processing. Traditionally, phlebotomist technicians are associated with drawing and preparing blood in hospitals, clinics or physician’s offices. However, phlebotomists can be employed in a wide variety of fields that work with any bodily fluids that can be laboratory tested. The Phlebotomy Tech program runs from May 8 through Aug. 16.
Pharmacy technicians are health care professionals who have been trained to assist pharmacists to dispense prescription medication. Depending on the position, the technician also may manage third-party billing, answer telephones, direct customers to items or to the pharmacist for medication consultation, receive written prescriptions, clean and sterilize dispensing bottles and instruments, answer questions regarding non-drug products, and operate a cash register. The Pharmacy Tech program runs from May 9 through Aug. 16.
Veterinarian assistants work with veterinarians and veterinarian technicians to provide medical care to animals. Duties for vet assistants range from feeding and watering animals to sterilizing lab and surgical equipment and preparation of samples for lab examination and more. The Vet Assistant program runs from May 9 through Sept. 22.
