The Aiken Department of Public Safety is investigating following a shooting incident at an apartment complex on Laurens Street in downtown Aiken early Monday morning, which left one person hospitalized.

Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Monday to Aiken Regional Medical Centers to speak with a 26-year-old man who was shot in an incident at his apartment on the 800 block of Laurens Street, according to the report.

The victim told investigators someone knocked on his door, asking for his brother, but when he opened the door the suspect held up a pistol and started firing into the residence, the report states.

The victim said he ran to the back of his home, but was shot in his left arm, police reported.

He claimed he did not recognize the shooter, only stating it was a “young black male,” according to the report.

After the suspect fled, the victim said his friend’s sister drove him to the hospital, police reported.

Investigators then responded to the 900 block of Alfred Street to meet with a 24-year-old woman who witnessed the shooting due to her also being in the apartment at the time of the incident.

She told police she was at the victim’s apartment to do his hair and, while inside the apartment, someone knocked on the door twice, according to the report.

The witness said the victim answered the door and then left it open, which is when the suspect started shooting, the report states.

During this time, she also ran to a back bedroom to hide, saying there was at least 10 shots fired. She also told investigators it sounded like there may have been two different guns being fired.

Once the suspect, or suspects, fled the scene, she ran to the adjacent bedroom where she found the victim bleeding from his left arm, the report states.

She said she then called her sister, who drove over to take the victim to the hospital.

Investigators asked the female witness if she got a good look at the suspect when the victim opened the door, but she claimed she did not see the suspect, police reported.

The shooting is still under investigation as officers work to determine the identity of the shooter(s).

Anyone with information about the shooting or the identity of the suspect(s) involved is asked to contact Aiken Public Safety at 803-642-7620.
