Shugart pitches 6 scoreless innings for Texas in 10-0 win

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Chase Shugart pitched six scoreless innings, DJ Petrinsky hit a three-run homer and Big 12 champion Texas beat Texas Southern 10-0 in an NCAA regional opener Friday night.

Kody Clemens, the Big 12 player of the year and son of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, had a two-run single in the fifth for the Longhorns (38-20). David Hamilton then stole home to make it 9-0

Shugart (5-3) limited SWAC Tournament champ Texas Southern (27-27) to four singles while striking out five without a walk.

Texas Southern starter Peyton Schneider (4-7) allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked four.

The top-seeded Longhorns play Texas A&M on Saturday night, the first postseason meeting for the former Big 12 and Southwest Conference rivals since 2014.

Texas Southern will take on Indiana in an elimination game earlier Saturday.
