City of Sturgis, Meade County move to vacate section line
STURGIS — The Sturgis City Council and the Meade County Commission both voted to vacate a section line right of way on property in southwest Sturgis.
The land, owned by LPN Holdings, Inc., is located to the south of Lazelle Street at the mouth of Boulder Canyon.
Mike Leveque, managing member of LPN Holdings, said in a letter to the city council that the section line right of way has not been used and no longer serves any useful public purpose.
Clearing up that property will hopefully lead to development, said City Councilman Mike Bachand.
Lot 1A of the property contains portions of land that were both in and out of city limits. Therefore, LPN Holdings was required to submit a voluntary annexation petition for those portions that were previously outside of city limits. Leveque, on behalf of LPN Holdings, did so, city officials said.
The commission approved vacating the portion of the section line within the county at its Aug. 23 meeting. The Sturgis City Council approved vacating the remainder of the section line at its meeting Tuesday.
“The reason we annex properties is for their future growth potential. We want to expand our tax base,” Bachand said.
The county commission in approving the section line right of way vacation said it could be vacated because it does not form a part of the Meade County Highway System, or the State of South Dakota Trunk Highway System, nor does the Section Line Right-of-Way provide access to public lands.
The county’s resolution stated that it would be in the public’s best interest to vacate the section line right of way.
