Slicers baseball edges Highland

Jake Spence racked up a pair of hits, while Dave Applegarth pitched four innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one run in La Porte’s 4-3 home victory over Highland on Thursday night. AJ Reid took the loss for Highland, going six innings, allowing all four Slicer runs on six hits, while striking out eight.

NP baseball KO’s River Valley

The Cougars moved to 21-5 on the season with a 10-1 baseball victory over River Valley (Mich.) on Thursday. Hunter Robinson led the offense with a double, home run and a trio of RBI. Roman Kuntz was 3-for-3 with two triples and scored three times. J.C. Turley added three hits, and Frank Turley added two more. Dimitri Scofield got the win on the mound, giving up one run in 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Josh Conley threw 3 2/3 shutout innings with five strikeouts.


LP softball smacks Elkhart Central

Behind a two-hit night from Shelby Linn and a pair of long balls from Megan Reed and Maddie Ponsier, the Slicers defeated Elkhart Central in softball on Thursday, 15-5. La Porte scored 10 of its 15 runs in the first two innings in the shortened five-inning affair.

LP duels with Valpo, LC on course

Max Holmes shot a team-low 39, but La Porte (180) dropped a double-dual boys golf matchup with Valparaiso (156) and Lake Central (167) on Thursday. Jack Schable carded 45, and Graham Siefker finished with 47.

La Porte Baseball Summer Camp in June

The La Porte Slicer baseball coaching staff and players will conduct the annual summer baseball camp June 10-June 13 for students currently in Kindergarten through fifth grade, at Schreiber Field. Times are: K-second grade, 10-11:25 a.m.; and third-fifth grade, 11:30 a.m.-12:55 p.m. Cost of the camp will be $40 per player. Players should wear tennis shoes or cleats, shorts, sweat pants, or baseball pants and a T-shirt. Players should bring baseball gloves. Instructors will be La Porte High School baseball players and coaches. Registration due date is June 4. Players will receive a T-shirt, but they can’t assure T-shirt sizes on late registrations. Area baseball sectional pairings

The area baseball sectional draw was announced by the IHSAA on May 5. La Porte faces South Bend Riley in a Class 4A Plymouth Sectional opener, and Michigan City plays Mishawaka at Plymouth in another opener. New Prairie meets John Glenn in the first round of the Class 3A Mishawaka Marian Sectional, while three-time defending sectional-champion South Central faces Argos in a Class A South Bend Career Academy Sectional opener. LaCrosse plays Triton in another opener at South Bend Career Academy, and Marquette meets the host Senators in a Class A Washington Township Sectional opener. In the same sectional at WT, Westville faces Gary 21st Century. Sectionals run May 22‐27 with winners moving into a two‐game regional on June 1.


Area softball sectional pairings

The area softball sectional draw was announced by the IHSAA on April 28. La Porte faces Penn in a Class 4A Mishawaka Sectional opener, and Michigan City receives a bye and plays Hobart in a Class 4A Chesterton Sectional semifinal. New Prairie gets a bye and meets South Bend Clay in a Class 3A South Bend St. Joseph Sectional semifinal, while LaCrosse plays West Central in a Class A Triton Sectional opener. In the same sectional at Triton, five-time defending sectional-champion South Central receives a bye and faces the host Trojans in a semifinal. In the Class A Westville Sectional, the host Blackhawks meet Morgan Township in an opener, and Marquette gets a bye and plays Washington Township in a Westville Sectional semifinal. Sectionals run May 20‐25 with winners moving into a one‐game regional on May 28.

All-Star Basketball tickets on sale at LPHS

A limited number of tickets are available for purchase in the La Porte High School athletic office for the Indiana/Kentucky girls and boys all-star basketball games on June 8 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Cost of a ticket is $15. The girls game will begin at 4 p.m. CDT, followed by the boys game at 6 p.m. La Porte County will be well represented as Slicer Riley Ott, Michigan City’s Hannah Noveroske and Marquette twins Emma and Sophia Nolan will participate.

Marquette selling All-Star Basketball tickets

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has made pre-sale tickets available at a discounted price of $15 for lower bowl seats for the June 8 Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Tickets can be reserved by calling 219-873-1325 or emailing director of athletics Katie Collignon at Katie.Collignon@marquette-hs.org. Marquette’s Emma and Sophia Nolan, Michigan City’s Hannah Noveroske and La Porte’s Riley Ott are on the team.

Area prep athletic events postponed

Some area high school athletic events were postponed due to rain on Thursday. La Porte’s JV baseball game at Highland was canceled. The Slicers’ JV softball home game versus Elkhart Central was also canceled.

Slicers athletic schedule change

La Porte has added a varsity softball doubleheader on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Carroll (Fort Wayne).

Owls for Avery Foundation Golf Tourney

The Owls for Avery Foundation has The OFAF Open Golf Tournament fundraiser on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Legacy Hills Golf Course. It’s looking for players and sponsors. The purpose is to raise money for childhood cancer research. For more information and to register, visit owlsforavery.org/event.

Slicers JV baseball rolls over City

La Porte’s JV baseball team drubbed Michigan City 11-0 on Wednesday in City. The Slicers’ Hayden Lowe tallied the win, surrendering no runs on two hits in four innings. He struck out three and walked none. Jack McGuire threw two scoreless innings in relief. McGuire, Shane Weaver, Gabe Kirkpatrick and Brady Bernth all had multiple hits.

City hosting FB showcase

Michigan City will host a Region College Football Showcase for prospective college athletes May 28 at Ames Field. Registration is at 5 p.m. NCAA Division II and III and NAIA coaches will be on hand for evaluation. The linemen session will run from 5:30 to 6:30 followed by the skill position session from 7 to 8:15, The event will consist of footwork and position drills, one on ones and seven on sevens. Athletes will receive a registration numbered T-shirt to aid in the identification process. Cost is $10 per athlete. A concession stand will be open for spectators.
