Duffy powers GHS girls hockey team past Fairfield

Junior forward Hayley Duffy scored two goals and added an assist to propel; the Greenwich High School girls hockey team to a 5-2 win over Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe on Tuesday night in an FCIAC matchup at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink.

The Cardinals have extended their winning streak to three games and raised their record to 10-1. Senior forward Riley Ellsworth’s goal with 9:53 remaining in the first period got the Cardinals going offensively. Junior forward Paige Finneran assisted on the goal.

The visitors tied the score at 1-1 when Samantha Henchcliffe tallied at the 4:23 mark of the opening period. Sophia Mughal set up the goal. The Cardinals took the lead for good when junior forward Jennifer Kelly scored off a setup by Finneran, making it 2-1 with 8:53 to go in the second period.

Duffy added a goal in the second period with 7:31 left, putting the home team in front 3-1. Defender Sydney Orszulak assisted on the goal. In the third period, the Cardinals added onto their advantage.

Duffy’s unassisted goal 36 seconds into the final period gave Greenwich a 4-1 edge. Freshman forward Emiri Fukuchi scored off a pass from Duffy with 6:14 remaining, putting Fairfield in a 5-1 hole.

Sophia Mughal of Fairfield scored the game’s final goal. Grace Flink and Zhenna Milo each assisted on the tally. Senior goaltender Jessie Aselin had another strong effort, making 21 saves in the winning effort.

Sidney Falterer stopped 24 shots for the visitors. Greenwich will go for its fourth straight win Friday against Trumbull-St. Joseph at Shelton Rinks at 5:30 p.m.
