San Benito hiring teens for Summer Beautification Program

April 23, 2019 GMT

SAN BENITO — Once again, several teens are going to be able to put their skills to work this summer and learn the value of a dollar.

For the fifth year, the San Benito Parks and Recreation Department is looking to hire 10 teenagers for the city’s annual Summer Beautification Program.

The program focuses on “beautifying” areas of San Benito while providing a summer job opportunity to teens.

With adult supervision, selected teens will be completing beautification assignments such as planting flowers and trees, painting and picking up trash.

The program starts Monday, June 3 and will end Thursday, June 27.

Applicable candidates must be 14 to 16 years old.

Each employee will be paid $7.50 an hour and will be able to work up to 15 hours per week.

Applications are available for pick up at the San Benito Parks and Recreation Department Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 3.

Based on submitted applications, Parks and Recreation Department personnel will select several candidates to interview.

“ Some of the things we look for in selecting candidates are strong work ethics, reliable characteristics and responsibility,” said Parks and Recreation Director Art Garza.

The Summer Beautification Program was established in 2015.

According to Garza, the program has provided a positive impact to teenagers who have been selected.

“ They learned leadership quality skills, how to work together in a team, how to accomplish goals and not only that, they enjoyed giving back to the community,” he said. “We’ve also given several letters of recommendation so on our end that is very gratifying.”
