Judges will hear appeal of jailed Mennonite investigator

March 2, 2018

DENVER (AP) — Colorado appeals court judges rejected a request to release a defense investigator as she appeals her jail sentence for refusing to testify for prosecutors in a death penalty case.

The decision released Thursday was based on a technicality, and the panel plans to hear arguments about the case on Friday.

Greta Lindecrantz, a Mennonite who opposes capital punishment, was jailed Monday after she repeatedly refused to testify about her work on the defense team of a man on death row. Lindecrantz has said she fears her testimony could be used to put Robert Ray to death.

Ray’s defense team is challenging his sentence partly by arguing that he did not have an effective legal team at trial.

Prosecutors apparently subpoenaed Lindecrantz to support their argument that Ray had good representation.
