Sutherlin woman dies in I-5 crash

February 12, 2018

A 34-year-old Sutherlin woman died Sunday due to injuries sustained in a car crash near Roseburg in which she was not wearing her seatbelt, police said.

Oregon State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near milepost 131 around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

A semitrailer driven by 43-year-old Kerry Kippes was traveling northbound when 29-year-old Brandy Haga drove into the back of the trailer with her 2008 Chrysler minivan, police reports said. Haga told police she didn’t see the semitrailer in the slow lane in front of her.

Haga and her three passengers — Jennifer Cruz, 34, Desiree Urena, 30, and Amanda Castro, 22, all of Sutherlin — were transported to the hospital for unknown injuries.

Cruz died from her injuries at the hospital, according to police.

Haga is in serious condition, Urena was not seen and Castro was treated and released, according to Mercy Medical Center.

The investigation is open, but criminal charges will not be filed, according to police.
