New Mason County Airport manager is now on the job
PERE MARQUETTE TWP. — John O’Connor is now in charge of the Mason County Airport, although long-time airport manager Dave Johnson is still operating his company, Mason County Aviation, and is available to help O’Connor get his start.
O’Connor, a Ludington native, began his aviation career at Mason County Airport in 1993 as a student pilot and started in his new role as airport manager May 1. He is happy to be back home.
“I’m trying to learn what I can from Dave,” he said about Johnson. “He’s been great.”
O’Connor said he’s been busy working 11-hour days at the airport since taking on the role of airport manager. He is learning the differences between the work associated with his past job — 18.5 years in airport operations at Denver International Airport — and his new position managing a general operations airport.
“Mason County Airport is not regulated near as much,” he said in comparing commercial aviation and general operations. “And I appreciate the more personal relationships with the pilots and aircraft owners. It’s a much more intimate setting than a commercial airport.”
