Police investigate theft from convenience store
Rome police detectives are investigating the theft of a bank bag with more than $1,600 in cash from a convenience store on Dean Avenue.
According to Rome police reports:
The clerk at the Dean Mini Mart, 1519 Dean Ave., said a woman came in around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and asked for change to play the gaming machines in the store. As soon as she left the counter, a man reached across the counter and grabbed a blue bank bag then fled, leaving the property in a black GMC Envoy.
The security video indicated the theft occurred at 1:35 p.m. but the call to 911 didn’t occur for almost an hour. The video also indicated the suspect actually entered the store around 12:45 p.m. and spent some time in the gaming area and had been hanging around the counter for a while prior to the theft.
A store management official told police when he got to the store and reviewed the video, he had an idea of who the suspect was and tried to contact another individual who the employee felt could help locate the suspect. The manager told police the delay occurred because he was trying to get the money back and did not necessarily want to prosecute.
