Molly Smith Simply Sensational in Winning Women’s Cities
TYNGSBORO -- According to golf lore the Masters really doesn’t start until the back nine on Sunday.
The same can now be said about the Lowell Women’s Cities Tournament on Saturday.
In an incredible dual between the Smith sisters, Molly and Morgan, that is sure to become part of local links legend, Molly Smith put together a finishing nine hole run that provided some amazingly entertaining theater.
Molly Smith, 13, had a hole-in-one, five birdies and three pars en route to carding a 7-under 29 on the back nine to finish at even-par 72 for the 18-hole tournament while rallying to edge her older sister, Morgan, 14, by a stroke in the 20th annual Women’s Cities Tournament at Vesper CC.
Last July, Molly Smith, a member of Long Meadow GC’s team, prevailed in the second hole of a three player sudden-death playoff, that included Jessica Hughes and Sophie Flabouris, at Nabnasset Lake CC to win her first Cities at age 12. The Smith sisters are the daughters of eight-time Lowell Men’s Cities champion, Phil Smith.
Morgan Smith of Mount Pleasant short a 1-under 35 on the back nine while shooting a 73.
Annie Windhol of Nabnasset Lake was third at 78, followed by Caitlin Barry of Long Meadow at 79, Sheila Montminy of Vesper at 82 and Janice Carroll of Vesper at 85.
