98-year-old veteran becomes first woman in VA Wall of Heroes
SEATTLE (AP) — A 98-year-old Army nurse was honored as the first woman named to the VA Puget Sound Wall of Heroes.
KIRO-TV reports Washington Gov. Jay Inslee honored 1st Lt. Frances Harman during a ceremony Thursday.
Harman, originally from Danville, Ohio, enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1942 during World War II. Harman, while deployed in New Guinea, worked in the burn ward for a year treating severely wounded service members.
She and her colleagues developed a new way to treat burns. They sprayed the wounds with penicillin, which was a relatively new drug at the time, and placed a single sheet of Kleenex on top.
