Westville baseball cruises in sectional opener

Westville’s baseball team drubbed Gary 21st Century 19-1 in five innings in a Class A Washington Township Sectional opener on Thursday. The Blackhawks’ Manny Guevara went 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Jackson Nowatzke finished 1-of-3 with three RBI. Andrew Kreighbaum went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three RBI. Preston Lake and Kreighbaum pitched in the win. Lake allowed one earned run on four hits in three innings, striking out three and walking none. Kreighbaum threw two scoreless innings, giving up no hits. He fanned six and walked one. Westville next meets Kouts today in a Washington Township Sectional semifinal at 11 a.m.


Blazers boys golf splits pair

Marquette’s boys golf team edged Elkhart Christian Academy 186-189 on Thursday at the Creek. Michael Sakich earned medalist honors and led the Blazers with 41. Sakich parred five of the nine holes, including each of the first three. Robert Pruzin birdied the 161-yard No. 5 hole and shot 46, and Romeo Bui carded 48. Freshman Charlie O’Halloran added 51.

On Friday, Marquette honored its lone senior, Michael Sakich, at Michigan City Golf Course. Sakich responded by carding the team’s low round of 46, but Illiana Christian prevailed 168-191 on Senior Day. Pruzin and O’Halloran each tallied 47, and Bui shot 51. The Blazers (9-3) next play in the sectional next Friday at Beechwood Golf Course.

La Porte Baseball Summer Camp in June

The La Porte Slicer baseball coaching staff and players will conduct the annual summer baseball camp June 10-June 13 for students currently in Kindergarten through fifth grade, at Schreiber Field. Times are: K-second grade, 10-11:25 a.m.; and third-fifth grade, 11:30 a.m.-12:55 p.m. Cost of the camp will be $40 per player. Players should wear tennis shoes or cleats, shorts, sweat pants, or baseball pants and a T-shirt. Players should bring baseball gloves. Instructors will be La Porte High School baseball players and coaches. Registration due date is June 4. Players will receive a T-shirt, but they can’t assure T-shirt sizes on late registrations. FB showcase Tuesday at Ames

Michigan City will host a Region College Football Showcase for prospective college athletes Tuesday at Ames Field. Registration is at 5 p.m. NCAA Division II and III and NAIA coaches will be on hand for evaluation. The linemen session will run from 5:30 to 6:30 followed by the skill position session from 7 to 8:15.


The event will consist of footwork and position drills, one on ones and seven on sevens. Athletes will receive a registration numbered T-shirt to aid in the identification process. Cost is $10 per athlete. A concession stand will be open for spectators.

Briar Leaf Summer Junior Camps

Briar Leaf Golf Club is offering its popular Summer Junior Golf Camps beginning in June. The camps are offered four times in the summer and feature professional swing instruction from PGA Professional Jay Williams and PGA Associate Cody Ward and their staff, as well as on-course play. Beginning juniors can register for the First Swing Program, while experienced golfers may participate in the Players Club. La Porte Junior Golf Tour

Registration is now open for this summer’s La Porte Junior Golf Tour. Designed for juniors who have on-course playing experience, the tour visits Briar Leaf, Beechwood, Legacy Hills and Michigan City Municipal in a seven-tournament schedule. Players will compete in age groups ranging from eight to 17 years old for both boys and girls. At only $45 for the season, the tour provides a great opportunity for juniors to play at all of the local public golf courses in a tournament atmosphere.
