Atascocita sweeps Clear Springs to advance to regional semifinal
Atascocita defeated Clear Springs 9-8 in Game 2 of a Class 6A regional quarterfinal series at Chargers field Friday night.
The Eagles swept the Chargers to advance to the regional semifinal.
Atascocita will play the winner of the Cy-Fair-Fort Bend Ridge Point regional quarterfinal series.
Atascocita scored six runs in the top of the of the sixth inning to take a 9-3 lead.
Steven Cortina had two RBI while Clay Bradford and DJ Taylor added two hits apiece for the Eagles.
The Eagles nine runs came off of nine hits.
Clear Springs had four erros in the game and also had three errors in Game 1 of the series.
The Chargers didn’t go away and scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but those would be the last runs of the season for Clear Springs.
“Every team at this point is a quality opponent,” said Atascocita head coach Eric Matthews after Game 1. “Clear Springs is a quality opponent. You have to come out and play good baseball and we did that tonight. You don’t have to play perfect baseball because things are going to go up and down throughout the game.
Atascocita senior pitcher Caleb Cannon pitched a no-hitter in Game 1 as the Eagles defeated the Chargers 10-0 in five innings due to a mercy run-rule.
Tyler Boyd hit a 3-run home run in and Brice Matthews added three RBIs in Game 1 for the Eagles.
