Fire destroys garage, damages another in Homer
The cause of a fire in Homer that destroyed one garage and damaged another Tuesday morning is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
According to the Winona County Sheriff’s department, Pickwick Fire and Rescue responded to a report from a property owner that a detached garage that had caught fire on Old Homer Road at about 2:06 a.m.
Firefighters were joined on scene by Ridgeway Fire and Rescue, a tanker truck from Winona Fire Department and the Winona County Sheriff’s department.
Pickwick Fire Chief Adam Zimmerman said while the garage was totaled in the fire, firefighters were able to save a neighbor’s garage located a little more than a foot away. It suffered only minor damage.
No vehicles were in the garage, which had been converted into a wood shop, at the time of the fire.
The family’s home located nearby also suffered some heat damage to the exterior of the building.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
According to deputies, the owner believes the fire may have been caused by charcoal starter left near the garage the day before.
