Man Castrated For Child Molestation Faces Jail For Same Crime
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A 69-year-old man, who chose castration over prison nearly 40 years ago for molesting two girls, now faces a 10-to 12-year sentence for molesting three other children.
Alfred W. Bayley has pleaded guilty to molesting three San Fernando Valley children and is to be sentenced July 16.
″In 1946 they took care of the problem, they thought,″ said Los Angeles police Detective Dale Barraclough.
″But shortly after he got off probation he started taking weekly injections of hormones. He shot himself in the rear end with a hypodermic needle. That increased his desires,″ Barraclough said.
In 1946, it was legal for Pasadena Superior Court Judge Frank C. Collier to give the 30-year-old Bayley the choice of castration over prison. Bayley made his choice over the objections of his wife, attorney and pyschiatrists, saying ″I am willing to do anything rather than go to the penitentiary,″ according to court records.
Police say the gray-haired and bearded Bayley, from Chatsworth, has been answering newspaper advertisements for babysitters the past 10 years and molesting children he was hired to watch.
″He is the grandfather type,″ said Detective Douglas Varner. ″While mom and dad were away, he’d play with the kids.″
Police arrested Bayley on Feb. 8 after a 12-year-old girl told her mother she had been molested by a babysitter four years earlier.
Bayley, who is free on bail, was charged with molesting three girls, ages 4 to 8. He met the girls through babysitting jobs or friends of their families, police said.
″He is an unusual sort, because he is not interested in just one sex, and it doesn’t make much difference how old the person is,″ said Varner.
Bayley has had many jobs over the years and recently worked in convalescent hospitals in the San Fernando Valley and cared for handicapped people in private homes.
″(Bayley) really is a fine, fine gentleman, other than this area of his life,″ defense attorney Bruce M. Gleason has said. ″He is an elderly gentleman, and he is embarrassed over this.″
