BOSTON (AP) — A man has been shot by police and a Boston police officer has been injured during a confrontation in the city's South Boston neighborhood.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement that troopers and city police responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun walking in South Boston around 9 p.m. Wednesday. He says an investigation suggests that the man fired his weapon and that one or more officers returned fire.

The suspect was struck and taken to a local hospital. The police officer also was taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries and their conditions were not known early Thursday and they were not identified.

The shooting is being investigated.
