Ex-Georgia jailer convicted of rape captured in California
ATLANTA (AP) — A former corrections officer convicted of statutory rape in Georgia has been captured in California, after nearly a year on the run.
News outlets cite a Tuesday statement from Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson that says Charles Barry Pinckney was arrested Sept. 14 in Corona, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles.
Pinckney is a former DeKalb County detention officer convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl at his home. He absconded days before his October 2017 conviction.
Jackson says tellers at a local bank branch discovered Pinckney was using fraudulent credentials to withdraw funds, and alerted authorities. Corona police discovered he was a fugitive after processing his fingerprints.
Upon return to Fulton County, he’ll be transferred to the Georgia Department of Corrections to serve up to 45 years in prison.
