Entrepreneur: Handyman wants you to feel good about a job done right

November 11, 2018 GMT

Describe your business.

I specialize in Sheetrock, taping and painting, but I also do many other handyman services like trenching for gutters and lots of demos. I can do many things that a homeowner doesn’t want to do.

What drove you to launch your own business?

I have had my own business for many years and I was ready to change careers. I did this line of business for many years before my current career. Also a big inspiration from a great friend that’s helping me get this started — Lee Cummins, the owner of Jetter Clean.

How many hours do you typically work in a week?

For right now I’m running two businesses so on average I’m working upwards of 80-plus hours a week. Running two businesses is a lot of work, but with the help of my wife, family and friends it’s been going great so far.

How many employees?

I’m on my own. But when I need help I have some friends and family that will come help out.

When did you start your business?

I started this business in July 2018, but I have many years experience. I started in high school and worked the field for 10 years. Then I got out, started an at-home business to stay home with my kids, but I would help people do things over the years so really never fully quit.

Do you work elsewhere in addition to the time you put in at your business?

Well, I haven’t left my other job yet. I’m still doing in home daycare during the day and the handyman services in the evening. With the help of my wife this has been a great experience she helps with the daycare in the afternoon after her full-time job so I can leave and do the handyman service. Many of my customers seem to really like that. I’m doing a variety of jobs which really helps make this great.

What sacrifices did you make to launch this business and to keep it running?

I have had to make some big sacrifices like miss some of my kids sports. I’m not spending as much time with the family as I would like. In due time it will get a lot easier.

What is the best thing about owning a business?

The best thing about owning my own business is I get to meet a lot of people, and I’m the one that gets to make them feel good about the jobs being done right.

What is the hardest thing about owning a business?

I think the hardest thing about owning my own business is trying to be at multiple places at one time. But I sure do the best I can.

What’s your hope for your business in the next year?

I hope in the next year I can build a great client list and keep as many as possible happy while still adding clients.

What inspires you to keep doing it?

The inspirations come from the people I meet, the jobs I get to do and seeing so many different styles of homes.

Knowing what you know now, would you do anything different?

The only thing that I would think that I would change would be starting this earlier then I did. Other then that I wouldn’t change anything about this.
