Wasatch Academy edges out Lady Hawks

MT PLEASANT — North Sanpete’s Lady Hawk basketball team hosted in-town rivals Wasatch Academy in a thrilling competition. Scoring was close throughout the game, which was won by a slim margin of four points by the Wasatch Tigers.

Since both teams’ home courts reside in Mt. Pleasant, each knew that this would be a rivalry game for the books, and any spectator could see that the game was a little more physical than usual.

At the start of the first quarter both teams were putting points on the board. However, toward the end of the quarter, Wasatch’s #2 Duda sank two layups and free throws that brought the Tigers to 11 points, while the Hawks had scored five.

Although the Tigers had a solid lead, the Lady Hawks didn’t back down. With impressive defense, the Hawks were able to shut down the Tigers offense in the second quarter.

The Hawks also employed more precise ball movement which allowed several team members to score. At the end of the second quarter the Hawks had scored 13 points while holding the Tigers to only four additional points.

At the end of the first half the Lady Hawks led the Wasatch Tigers 18-15. When the third quarter started the physicality only heightened as each team battled for the lead.

Wasatch began to move the ball more efficiently on their end, opening up several scoring opportunities on which they capitalized. The Hawks also continued to be strong offensively with junior #2 Sarah Oldroyd scoring six of her nine total points for the Hawks.

At the end of the third quarter, Wasatch reclaimed the lead with a 26-24 score heading into the fourth quarter. When the fourth quarter began, both teams came out strong, but it was the Tigers who ended up on top.

Multiple players for Wasatch contributed points during the fourth and last quarter, but the Hawks struggled to find the hoop. Lady Hawk seniors #11 Linzy Flinders, and #10 Aubree Ison contributed the only points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Hawks scored six more points but the Tigers edged them out by scoring nine. The Wasatch Tigers took the victory with a score of 35-31.
