NEW YORK (AP) — St. John's senior Nadirah McKenith, who led the Big East in assists, has been chosen the Metropolitan Area women's college basketball player of the year.

Fordham coach Stephanie Gaitley, who led the Rams (26-9) to their best record in 29 years, was selected coach of the year Friday by the Met Basketball Writers Association.

Joining McKenith, who finished as the Red Storm's career assists leader, on the first team are Shenneika Smith of St. John's, Shante Evans of Hofstra, Damika Martinez of Iona, Erin Rooney of Fordham and Elizabeth Beynnon of Marist.

Gaitley led the Rams to their second-most victories in a season.

Aliyyah Handford of St. John's was selected rookie of the year.
