Waunakee senior Blake Smithback, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound offensive tackle, has de-committed from South Dakota State and accepted a preferred walk-on offer from the University of Wisconsin.
Smithback was a first-team choice on the Wisconsin State Journal/WisconsinPrepZone.com All-Area football team this fall.
Smithback was a first-team Wisconsin Football Coaches Association all-state selection and a second-team selection as an offensive lineman on the Associated Press all-state football team.
Smithback, an outstanding run blocker for the Badger North Conference champion Warriors, was a two-time Badger North offensive lineman of the year pick and two-time unanimous Badger North first-team selection at offensive tackle.
He announced the decision via Twitter on Friday, first offering thanks, including to his parents and coaches, then writing: “With that said, I am officially de-committed from South Dakota State. I have the utmost respect for the players and coaches at that university and wish them luck in the future. However, I have been afforded the opportunity to follow my childhood dream. I am committing to the University of Wisconsin and accepting their walk-on offer.”
Columbus offensive lineman Josh Seltzner, who also had been offered preferred walk-on status at UW, announced via Twitter on Jan. 5 that he had committed to the Badgers.
