Pitt grad, National Book Award winner uses dark poetry to explain the world

Daniel Borzutzky almost seems sheepish about being recognized for his accomplishments. The former Squirrel Hill resident and University of Pittsburgh graduate, who won a National Book Award for his poetry collection “The Performance of Becoming Human” in 2016, admits the recognition “comes with a cultural capital.”

“But having said all of that, there are tons of great books written every year which do not get recognized in that way,” says Borzutzky, who appears March 29 at the Ace Hotel in East Liberty. “I know there’s a lot of luck, and a lot of gratitude on my part.”
