TORONTO (AP) _ Roger Clemens’ contract with the Toronto Blue Jays remains unsigned as the pitcher’s representatives negotiate deferred payments, The Toronto Globe and Mail reported today.
The newspaper said the deal also has not been filed with the players association or the player-relations committee. Clemens, 34, agreed to terms with Toronto on Dec. 13 after 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox.
The contract includes a $2 million signing bonus, $5.5 million in 1997, $7.5 million in 1998 and $8 million in 1999. Toronto has an option for 1999 at $8.1 million with a $1.75 million buyout, which if exercised would raise total total package to $31.1 million over four seasons. The fourth year would become guaranteed if Clemens pitches regularly.
