Oregon Middle, Brooklyn Elementary schools named Green Ribbon winners
Two Oregon School District schools are in pretty select company today, being named Green Ribbon Schools for their conservation and community efforts.
Brooklyn Elementary School and Oregon Middle School were two of only 46 schools across the country honored by the U.S. Department of Education, according to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
The Brooklyn school was honored for its vegetable garden, with kids sharing the harvest with local food pantries and food stands. The school also has a large recycling program, and raised funds several years ago for a parcourse, or fitness trail, next to the school’s walking path.
The Oregon school was honored for generating 40 percent of its own energy needs, through solar and geothermal power.
Students also use solar-powered charging stations for their personal devices, recycle and sort waste and food scraps in the cafeteria, and grow fresh produce for use in the cafeteria.
