Lady ’Devs merciless
MOHAVE VALLEY — The Lady Dust Devils demolished the Chino Valley High School Lady Cougars 17-2 during Senior Night at River Valley High School on Tuesday.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association 3A West Region victory improved the No. 1-ranked Dust Devils’ record to 12-0 overall, 8-0 in conference and 7-0 in region, according to the aiaonline.org power-point rankings system. The No. 15-ranked Cougars’ record is 7-5 overall, 5-3 in conference and 3-3 in region.
The Dust Devils amassed 15 hits during their 4 1/2-inning, mercy-rule shortened triumph.
Senior shortstop Tiarra Williams hit a home run, singled twice, walked, had six RBI and scored twice in three at-bats.
Asked if she liked that pitch that she hit for home run, Williams said, “Yeah, I did, it was a low, inside pitch, just the way I like them.”
The No. 1-ranked Dust Devils led 11-0 after one inning, and senior third baseman Ryann Glenn, who went 2 for 2, walked twice, scored three runs and had one RBI in two at-bats, said: “I felt like we really saw the ball in the first inning and we were really worried about our accomplishments and goals a lot in the first inning,” she said. “And that was our goal.”
“We set team goals to just score every inning,” said Dust Devils head coach Kathleen Watson as her squad has made it a trend to take huge first-inning leads. “And doing the little things. ...”
Sophomore all-purpose player Olivia Yoney doubled, singled, knocked in two runs and scored two runs in two at-bats; senior catcher Brianna Bryant singled twice and knocked home one run in three at-bats; and senior first baseman Natalie Walters doubled, singled, had two RBI and scored two runs in two at-bats for the Dust Devils.
Senior pitcher Kortney Fletcher gave up two runs — one earned —on five hits, while striking out five and walking one to earn the win.
Fletcher also singled twice, walked, knocked in one run and scored two in three at-bats to help her cause at the plate.
