Strike up the rhythm

February 25, 2019 GMT

Hands, sticks and mallets were whirling through the air and striking drums, cymbals and bars during the sixth annual Percussion Palooza at Rock Falls High School Sunday afternoon. The event featured a solo and ensemble competition to prepare performers for high school competitions. Percussionists in middle school, high school and post-secondary showcased their skills at complex rhythms on the drums or melodic lines on xylophones and marimbas. Performers received feedback along with tips and tricks to enhance their percussion skills. Percussion Palooza is held in honor of Louie Bellson, a percussionist from Rock Falls who died in 2009. He performed with Duke Ellington, Count Bassie and other great jazz musicians.
