3 applicants who filed for candidacy on City Council disqualified

Three applicants who filed for candidacy on the City Council have been disqualified by the City of Laredo after a review of their applications for placement on the general election ballot.

According to a statement from the city, the following candidates did not complete their applications:

Jose M. “Chema” Guevara, who had filed for District 4George J. Altgelt, incumbent District 7James Joel Newland, who had filed for District 8

Applicants were required to submit their documents to the City Secretary’s Office by Monday. As the appointed authority to oversee elections for the City of Laredo, the City Secretary’s Office reviews the applications sufficiency for placement on the ballot.

The review includes compliance as to form, content and procedure that it must be satisfied to be placed on the ballot.

Candidates have been notified of their incomplete applications as is required under the Texas election code. City authorities consulted with legal counsel and the Secretary of State’s Office prior to this final determination.
