Wow! Camacho wasn’t kidding: T-birds thump Devils 12-1

MOHAVE VALLEY — T-birds boys head soccer coach Matt Camacho did not underestimate his players while discussing their future in early November.

“It’s going to be a good year; I will be surprised if we don’t make it into the state tournament this year — I’d be absolutely surprised,” Camacho said while watching his club practice at Mohave High School.

Camacho’s Mohave High School squad proved to be all of that — and even more — when his T-birds thumped the Dust Devils 12-1 at River Valley High School on Tuesday.

Alex Sandoval, Alvaro Soto, Soto, Josue Lizarraga, Soto, Logan Burgess, Lizarraga, Burgess and Lizarraga scored goals in succession to give the T-birds a 9-0 lead going into the intermission.

Burgess, Raffa Casteneda and Sandoval added second-half goals for Mohave, while River Valley’s Johnny Delgado spoiled T-birds keeper Renzo Perez’s shutout during the 68th minute.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A Grand Canyon Region T-birds’ season-opening nonconference victory impressed their head coach.

“These boys, there’s depth, there’s a lot of key players that are playing in top form right now and the bench — and like I said, we have enough depth on the bench, so if one kid gets subbed out we don’t have a position that can’t be filled,” Camacho said. “They put in the work during the offseason and that was kind of what we wanted to do right now is set the tone for the rest of the season.”

Despite giving up 12 goals, Dust Devils keeper Alexis Cabrera was superb.

“Alexis came out strong today, a lot of tough shots on him — he got hammered again and again,” River Valley head coach Sam Elander said after his team fell to 0-3. “He kept out a lot.”

The Mohave head coach was impressed with Cabrera.

“He stood very tall for their team tonight,” Camacho said.
