Scotland flyhalf Russell loses appeal against 2-week ban
LONDON (AP) — Scotland flyhalf Finn Russell has lost his appeal against a two-week suspension for a reckless tackle in the Six Nations loss to Wales 10 days ago.
A tournament appeal committee dismissed the appeal on Wednesday, and upheld the original sanction. Russell cannot play until Monday, meaning he will miss the test on Saturday against Italy at Murrayfield.
He was suspended for taking out counterpart Dan Biggar, who was in the air. The tournament judiciary described the incident as “reckless rather than deliberate.” Russell was yellow-carded for the offense in the 26-23 loss, but the judiciary believed he should have been red-carded.
The penalty was reduced by a week because of his clean record, but the Scottish Rugby Union was disappointed by the ruling.
