Light snow could affect Friday’s PM commute

December 15, 2017 GMT

Connecticut is likely to get its third batch of snow when a low pressure system passes south of Long Island Friday night.

While the forecast is calling for less than a half-inch, the timing of the snow could affect the drivers during the late afternoon commute.

The National Weather Service says there is a 40 percent chance of snow after 3 p.m. It says snow is likely between 7 and 9 p.m.

“Light snow is expected to develop late this afternoon and continue into the evening,” it says. “Generally one to two inches is forecast, and could result in slippery conditions during the evening commute.”

Like Thursday’s light snow, the higher amounts will be in southeast Connecticut and on Long Island.

The amount of snow that has already fallen this month is more the double than average.

Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Straford has had 5.4 inches of snow; the average for December is 2.5 inches.

The first substantial snow happened last Friday when up to 7 inches of snow fell. The highest amounts from Thursday’s snowfall were around 1.5 inches.

Early Friday morning had the coldest tempertaures since last January.

Danbury had a low of 11 degrees; cold, but not enough to beat the record of minus 4 degrees set in 2005.

Other low temperatures Friday morning were 6 degrees at Meriden airport, 8 degrees at Oxford airport, 15 at White Plains airport, 17 degrees at Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford, 19 at Tweed-New Haven airport,

High temperatures today will only range from mid 20s inland to lower 30s at the coast. Skies will clear overnight as the low departs. Lows will generally be into the 20s, upper teens well inland.
