Day in History: New beach area for Sandy Point Resort

1992 – 25 years ago

• An 18-member Special Operations Team from the Federal Medical Center has been dispatched to Los Angeles as part of President Bush’s approval of federal assistance to help with riots protesting the jury verdict acquitting four white police officers in the Rodney King case. Peaceful rallies were held in Rochester at the Olmsted Courthouse and at the Peace Plaza.

• It is possible in the future that flat televisions may hang on a wall like a Picasso. Manufacturers are finding the design called active-matrix liquid-crystal displays are harder to make than expected.


1967 – 50 years ago

• Sandy Point Resort on Lake Zumbro, north of Rochester, is getting a new beach area. The high bank between the launching ramp and the main building has been cut back into a gentler slope to allow easier access to the water and provide more sunbathing area. Fill from the excavation is being used to enlarge the parking lot and a new bathhouse is also being built.

• The last link in four-lane construction of U.S. 52 from Rochester to the Twin Cities may be opened to traffic this year. It is hoped a 9.4 mile stretch will be completed sometime in November.

• Public tours of Mayowood, the ancestral home of Drs. Charles H. and Charles W. Mayo, will begin this week. The 40-room mansion, built in 1910-1911, was given to the Olmsted County Historical Society in 1966. The price of the tour is $1.50 for adults.

1942 – 75 years ago

The Rochester High School letter winners were announced for the past season in hockey, basketball, gymnastics and cheerleading. Those receiving letters in gymnastics were Art Schreiber, John Higgins, Buckley Newcomb, Frank Domaille, Jack Dallman and Robert Twedt.

• The Zumbrota golf course will open tomorrow for members and their families. A dinner is to be served at 12:30 p.m. A tournament has been arranged for the course and for those not playing golf a bridge tournament will be played.

1917 – 100 years ago

Despite heavy rain, one of the largest crowds that ever gathered in the city hall of Chatfield to show their patriotism and pay honor to the young men who have enlisted to serve their country.
