Fifth person charged with murder in 2015 Ashley Phosphate shootout

A fifth person tied to a rolling gun battle in North Charleston that claimed the life of a woman has been charged with murder.

Keon Marquell Cortez Anderson, 21, of North Charleston had a bond hearing Tuesday in the shooting death of Dena Brown, a mother of three.

Early on May 10, 2015, young men and teenage boys were shooting at each other as they rode in cars through the city, police said. During the chase, one group mistook Brown’s car and opened fire on it. She was fatally shot.

According to an affidavit, Brown was driving her silver Chrysler 300 home from a Mother’s Day celebration. After crossing Interstate 26 going toward Northwoods Boulevard, a dark blue car drove up beside her. One of the car’s occupants fired four rounds and struck Brown’s neck and head. She later died from her injuries at Medical University Hospital.

An investigation revealed that Brown’s car resembled another Chrysler 300 that they were chasing.

According to an affidavit, the incident began in the Dorchester Waylyn neighborhood. Occupants of the Chrysler involved in the chase said the occupants of the blue car began shooting at them and chased them up Dorchester Road and onto Cross County Road, which connects Dorchester and Ashley Phosphate Road.

Once on Ashley Phosphate, North Charleston police saw the Chrysler 300 “traveling at a high rate of speed” and eventually stopped the car after it entered on I-26, according to the affidavit.

Around the same time, Brown drove over the interstate and encountered the car with the suspect. The affidavit states Anderson shot at Brown’s car and struck her twice, causing her to swerve into an Exxon station parking lot and hit a brick wall.

Because Anderson faces murder charges, a magistrate could not set bail.

Bail was set for Anderson’s four counts of attempted murder — one for each of the occupants in the Chrysler 300 — and for possession of a firearm while committing a violent crime. The judge set bail at $500,000.

Four others are facing the same charges as Anderson: 17-year-old Kenneth Lamont Robinson Jr.; Derrontae Holmes, 21, of Darlington Avenue, who was 19 at the time of Brown’s death; Richard Simmons, 22, of Poplin Avenue, who was 20 at the time; and a 17-year-old male who was 16 at the time.
