Chargers to work out 3 wide receivers
There is a chance Stevie Johnson could be ready to play in a matter of weeks.
That hasn’t kept the Chargers from developing a contingent plan.
Three wide receivers are scheduled to work out Tuesday at Chargers Park, sources said. James Jones, Brian Hartline and Lance Moore will undergo a physical and on-field workout as part of their visit. The team can afford to add depth at the position after Johnson, a ninth-year pro, suffered a meniscus injury Sunday that will require surgery.
How long Johnson, 30, will be sidelined won’t be known until after the procedure is complete, coach Mike McCoy said Monday.
Regardless, signing a veteran may be prudent. The team’s depth behind starters Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin is relatively inexperienced between Tyrell Williams, Dontrelle Inman and Javontee Herndon. The trio, while demonstrating clear ability, have combined for 83 career receptions.
Jones, 32, is a San Jose native who spent eight of his first nine NFL seasons in Green Bay. He caught 50 passes for a career-high 890 yards in 2015 with eight touchdowns. Against the Chargers in Week 5, he had two catches for 30 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Jones saw quarterback Philip Rivers throw for 503 yards that day in a losing effort. One ex-Packer, cornerback Casey Hayward, already has joined the team this offseason.
Hartline, 29, spent the first six of his seven seasons with the Dolphins before joining the Browns last year. The Ohio native caught 46 passes for 523 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games with Cleveland. He logged back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in 2012 and 2013.
Benjamin, signed in March, and Hartline were two of the Browns’ four leading receivers in 2015.
Moore will turn 33 this month. The first seven of his nine NFL seasons came in New Orleans before 2014 and 2015 in Pittsburgh and Detroit, respectively. The 5-foot-9, 187-pound receiver is a natural fit for the slot. His career year came in 2012 with 65 receptions for 1,041 yards and six scores. Moore has averaged 27 receptions for 331 yards and three touchdowns in the three years since.
