Man jailed on theft warrant charged with trying to escape

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A Springfield man faces charges accusing him of trying to escape from jail by pretending to be a different inmate.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports 38-year-old Kenneth R. Gullo Jr. was jailed for a theft warrant when a Sangamon County correctional officer on Tuesday called the name of another inmate being released on bond. Officials say Gullo yelled saying he was the inmate.

A sheriff’s report says Gullo had changed into the other inmate’s clothing and signed bond papers when officers heard knocking from a nearby cell. It was the other inmate saying he was the one supposed to be released. Sheriff’s officials say Gullo wouldn’t have been released because he would have had to give the other inmate’s specific personal information first.

Gullo is charged with attempted escape. Court records don’t list a defense attorney and Gullo has no listed phone number to pursue comment.
