August 12, 1997

ALMATY, Kazakstan (AP) _ Two convicts escaped from a maximum security prison in this former Soviet republic, killing seven people _ including a 4-year old girl _ before being seized by police, police said today.

One of the fugitives killed himself during his arrest and the other was returned to prison, said Alimzhan Zharylkaganov, a spokesman for the Kazak Interior Ministry.

The two men, identified only as Lavrikov and Frolov, escaped Saturday from their prison in northern Kazakstan, killing two soldiers and an officer, the Interfax news agency reported.

They seized two Kalashnikov assault rifles and commandeered a car after killing the driver. Later they stole another car, killing its 24-year old owner and her 4-year-old daughter.

Chased by police, they sprayed their pursuers with gunfire, killing a passer-by. The report did not say when the arrests were made.

Interior Ministry officials were investigating.
