Student Cross-Dresses To Win Nerd Contest
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) _ A male student donned women’s clothing to beat 12 other entrants in a nerd contest.
Jon Quan wore a blouse and multicolored ″reject from the ’60s skirt,″ to take first prize Wednesday at the University of California at Irvine. He won a compact disc player.
Quan, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student, hung a calculator case on his belt, jammed a pocket protector full of pens and pencils in a garter around his knee and accented his attire with makeup fit for a nerd.
The look featured ″a very messy job with eyeliner and eye shadow, lipstick smeared on my lips and about a quart of Dep in my hair,″ Quan said.
Physics major Alan Van Drie, 20, took second place with a costume that included mismatched socks, polyester pants and shirt, and a ″humongous calculator in my belt, as well as a huge slide rule hanging from my hip in case my batteries went dead.″
The contest was part of Engineering Week, celebrated on campuses across the country to help students poke fun at themselves.
