Report: Democratic women in Legislature up, Republicans down
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A report shows that Democratic women have gained ground in the New Hampshire Legislature, but that Republican women are falling behind.
The New Hampshire Women’s Foundation report released Tuesday shows the overall number of women in the House increased from 115 in 2017-2018 to 135 for 2019-2020 out of a total of 400 members. In the Senate, the number of women increased from seven in 2017-2018 to 10 for 2019-2020 out of a total of 24 members.
Most are Democrats. The report shows 29 Republican women in the Legislature in 2019-2020, down from 51 in 2001-2002.
Jennifer Frizzell, the foundation’s policy director, said efforts at reaching gender parity won’t be successful unless the decline is reversed and more women are elected from across the political spectrum.
