Letter: Take up the challenge to send child to outdoor camp

April 20, 2017

To the Editor:

This summer the Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) is expanding its Pond to Pines summer day camp offerings to cover the entire summer. Children in our community from pre-school to 14 years old will have camp options to learn about wildlife and habitat, nature’s playground, pioneering skills, nature art, leadership and more.

These camps are a great way for young children to experience nature. In his book “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv connects the lack of outdoor experiences for children in our country to the increase in obesity, depression, and attention disorders. Let’s get our kids outside!

Our Environment, a local group educating about, and advocating for, action to mitigate climate change challenges the Kittitas County community to match our donation to KEEN to “Send a Kid to Camp.” Our Environment donated $200 to send one community child to a week of camp. The challenge is on!

Help make it possible for any child in our community to get the benefit of learning and play in our local environment. More information about the “Send a Kid to Camp” program can be found at http://www.ycic.org/send-a-kid-to-camp. Donate or register your children now. Early bird registration ends on May 15. Thanks in advance to those taking up the challenge to provide nature experiences essential to healthy childhood development.
