Josephine Marie ‘Jo’ Virciglio -- Rochester

August 27, 2017

Josephine Marie “Jo” Virciglio passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. She died peacefully in the presence of her sister and brother-in-law.

Jo was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 12, 1934, to Norina (Toscano) and Carmelo Frank Virciglio. She attended school in Birmingham, and upon graduating from Ramsey High School, she started to work for Liberty National Life Insurance Company in the Field Personnel Department and was promoted to a vice president in that department. She enjoyed working there with many friends for over 30 years. Upon retirement, she worked part time for Franklin Life Insurance Company.

In 2006, Jo moved to Rochester to live near her sister and enjoyed a comfortable retirement at Madonna Meadows Living Community. She loved to read and was instrumental in getting a space for a lending library in the building. Jo really enjoyed helping to check in the books delivered by the public library, playing Bingo and helping in the Country Store.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Madonna Meadows for their excellent care and concern for Jo during her stay there and express their appreciation for the medical care provided by both Olmsted Medical and the Mayo/St. Marys medical communities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law, Lillie and Carlton Tanner, grandparents and many other relatives.

She is survived by her sister, Pauline (Mike) Varley; nieces, Carmel Tanner Adams and Anne (Jeremy) Broking; nephews, Michael (Carolyn) Varley and David (Michiko) Varley; great-nephews, Tanner Sherrill, Tucker Sherrill, Colton Adams and Levi Broking; and great-niece, Moka Varley.

A memorial service will be held at Madonna Meadows Assisted Living on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Birmingham, Ala., on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, at 10 a.m., with viewing one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family prefers memorials to Madonna Meadows Living Community, Rochester Public Library, American Diabetes Society, American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
