Cub golfers struggle at Providence Invitational
Madison’s boys golf played its final scheduled 18-hole warmup before the IHSAA sectional when it competed in the Providence Invitational at Champions Pointe Golf Club near Henryville on Saturday. The Cubs struggled to a 317 to finish in a tie with Columbus East for seventh place while No. 1-ranked Center Grove shot an impressive 281 to blaze to a 16-stroke win over runner-up Evansville Mater Dei’s school-record 297 in what amounted to a regional preview. “It was a tough day for a couple of our golfers,” Madison coach Dale Crafton said. “There are days like that on the golf course. We’ll hit practice next week and try to remedy the areas that caused the issues.” Landon Conner and Case Kiefer both carded 75s to lead Madison while Austin Mahoney shot a 78 and Blake Kiefer fired an 89 to round out the Cubs’ scoring. Drew Barron carded a 98 that was initially a non-scoring round but later factored into Madison’s tie-breaker with Columbus East for seventh place. Barron’s 98 was 14 strokes higher than the Owls’ fifth man. “For one it was mostly off the tee and it was putting for our other golfer,” said Crafton, explaining the team’s struggles. “Austin has been a consistent, reliable golfer all season. Case and Landon both played extremely well on a course that has to be managed very carefully.” Center Grove’s Sam Jean and Noah Gillard carded a pair of 68s to lead all golfers while Joe Weiler of No. 6 Bloomington South shot a 70, Issac Rohleder of Mater Dei had a 71 and Centre Grove’s Ethan Shepherd cared a 72. Team scores were: No. 1 Center Grove 281, Mater Dei 297, No. 6 Bloomington South 299, No. 14 Bedford North Lawrence 304, No. 11 Columbus North 306, Floyd Central 315, Columbus East 317, Madison 317, Bloomington North 323, Roncalli 324, Jasper 325, Perry Meridian 328, New Albany 328, Providence 330, Heritage Hills 376 and Seymour 380. Madison will compete on Thursday at Jennings County.
