9-year-old boy killed in western Montana hit-and-run

July 8, 2019

HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run crash in western Montana and a suspect is charged with negligent homicide and failure to remain at the scene of a crash.

The Montana Highway Patrol says the boy was on a scooter Saturday afternoon near Hamilton when he was hit by a speeding minivan.

ABC Fox Montana reports court documents say the boy’s family heard the crash and ran out to help. The boy’s father handed his phone to the driver and asked him to call 911. Court records say 59-year-old Joseph McNamara instead took the phone, got into his van and sped away.

A witness took a picture of McNamara’s van. He was arrested Sunday evening.

McNamara made an initial court appearance Monday and his bail was set at $500,000.

The boy’s name has not been released.
