LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Police say a customer thwarted an attempted robbery at a Lowell market by punching the suspect in the head and holding him down until police arrived.

Officers responded to Pailin Market at about 2:45 p.m. Monday and found several customers restraining the suspect.

Witnesses say a man walked into the store wearing a black ski mask and threatened to "hurt somebody" unless the clerk opened the register.

The Sun (http://bit.ly/GzEIDO ) reports that the robber kept his hand in his pocket, which led the clerk to believe he was armed.

A customer punched the suspect in the back of the head before tackling him.

Police say 44-year-old Frederick Pepe is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on an assault with intent to rob charge. It was not known if he has a lawyer.
