Authorities: Raleigh woman burned baby by putting heating pad in diaper

December 16, 2017 GMT

A Raleigh woman has been charged with child abuse after a baby was burned by a heating pad placed in a diaper.

Brenyelle Kimberly Bonds, 22, of 1116 Shadywood Lane, is charged with negligent child abuse causing serious physical injury.

According to an arrest warrant, Bonds “showed a reckless disregard for human life” by placing a “homemade heating pad” against the baby’s behind and securing it in place with a diaper.

The heating pad caused severe burns, the warrant states.

Authorities say two months later, the child recovered and is doing fine.

Court information shows the alleged abuse occurred on Sept. 1, but Bonds wasn’t charged until Thursday.

The incident happened when Bonds was babysitting at a home on Shadywood Lane in Raleigh.

She turned herself into authorities and was being held Friday in the Wake County jail under a $50,000 bond.

If she posts bond and is released, she is barred from any contact with the baby or with anyone under age 18 without supervision.

Her next court appearance is January 4.
