Stray Bullet Strikes Girl In Hazleton Home
HAZLETON — A gun discharged inside a home, sending a bullet through furniture and a wall before it struck a 13-year-old girl who was taking a bath Sunday afternoon.
The bullet pierced the skin but did not lodge in the girl, who was rushed to a trauma center, city police Chief Jerry Speziale said.
Another child who was also in the bathtub was not hurt.
Speziale said the gun belongs to a 35-year-old man, who is a security guard and has a permit to carry it, but Detective Brett Green will present evidence so the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office can decide whether to charge the man with negligently handling the gun.
Police responded to Alter and Fourth streets about 1 p.m.
Within minutes, an ambulance led by a police vehicle carried her away from the scene where police vehicles from the city and West Hazleton filled the street and people gathered in front of stores and homes to watch.
